New Traditions cover

UntitledStart a new tradition this year with your children. Instead of using one of those “count down calendars” that uses a tiny piece of chocolate to help the kids see how much time is left until Christmas, why not feed their brains while giving you some precious family time memories?

Determine the total number of days you are covering, whether you are counting down the entire month of December or just the Twelve Days of Christmas. Then buy books to wrap for that many days. If you have books from when you were a child, this might be a fun way to share them with your children. You can also wrap up books the kids already own but have forgotten about over time, or ones that are family classics such as The Polar Express.

Once you wrap the books, create a Christmas tree with them and place a star on top. You may want to number them if you have an order you want them opened in, just in case little hands decide to play. Then you can see the passage of time as your “tree” get shorter and shorter until you open the last one on Christmas Eve.

Do you need a few suggestions for books? Every year the Center for Children’s Books at the University of Illinois publishes a guide book to gift books (say that 10 times fast!). Here is a link to help you with ideas for your book tree.

So consider starting a new tradition this year or just pick out a few good books. Either way, enjoy the season with your family!
