Hello beloved library patrons! We have missed you while we are all hunkered down inside. Here are some Hoopla titles to help fill the void of not being able to check out physical materials. If you’ve never used Hoopla before, it has a ton of music, books, and movies to choose from. It even has audiobooks and TV shows. You can browse by genre and format and there is even a “kids mode” to filter out adult content for young ones. With 12 titles to check out per month, and consistently updated content by Hoopla, there is plenty to enjoy.

Here are my Hoopla picks for this week:

Movies

It’s been a bit of a crazy time lately, to say the least. And since many of us are already mostly in our pjs let’s have a “feel-good” movie night. My picks for this week are Amelie and Legally Blonde. If you haven’t seen them they are both romantic comedies with young women main characters who are learning to take ownership of their lives.

Amelie is a french film (with subtitles) about a precocious young woman who doesn’t connect with people except to do nice things for them anonymously. The music is delightful and the characters are unforgettable.

Legally Blonde is a fun and hilarious movie about Elle Woods, a bubbly sorority girl who is dumped by her boyfriend, and decides to follow him to Harvard Law School to win back his love. The problem is, she has to get into Harvard Law School. This is a great movie about believing in yourself, realizing what is important in life, learning who your real friends are.

Fiction e-books:

The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn
For readers of Gillian Flynn and Tana French, it’s “a twisty and powerful Hitchcockian thriller about an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime in a neighboring house.” If you love psychological suspense, read this!

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
a novel living in America but being part of two cultures, the novel spans many years and portrays the longing for one true identity. Lahiri’s beautiful prose is insightful, powerful, and delicate.

Non-Fiction e-books:

Lost Feast by Lorene Newman
is a fascinating book about the culinary history of our favorite foods. More than that, it will make us question why we eat what we do, and what this means for our food systems now and in the future. A fascinating exploration of food history, and what we need to consider for the health of the planet and those who live on it.

The Little Book of Being by Diana Winston
73 mini-chapters that help us learn “natural awareness” to experience moments of peace and connection, even in distracted and stressful times. With no formal sitting required, this book is accessible to all who seek to calm the mind.

The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers
Mostly everyone over 5 years old knows Mr. Rogers. This biography was written by a close friend of Rogers and delves into the man behind the beloved TV show, into the life of Fred Rogers before and after he became an advocate for children and youth programming, and creator of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

Music:

Lover by Taylor Swift
So you’ve been meaning to check out the new Taylor Swift? Hoopla has it! The ubiquitous pop star writes great pop-centered, feel good songs as well as more contemplative guitar and piano songs that bring us back to her earlier country music career.

Cuz I Love You by Lizzo
Her album will get you dancing in your kitchen!

Sleep Music
For those that are having a hard time winding down before bed, give this a try. It’s a blend of synth and piano, without lyrics, to help you calm your mind and soothe you to sleep.
