My Hero Academia Vigilantes cover

My Hero Academia is one of the biggest things going in the manga and anime spheres currently. It depicts a world in which the majority of people have super powers called ‘quirks’. Due to the immense destructive potential some of these powers have, they are tightly regulated, with only licensed heroes getting to use them in public.

My Hero Academia Vigilantes is a spin-off series that centers around a trio of unlicensed heroes that use their quirks to fight crime anyway.

Koichi is a first year college student with the ability to slide along the ground if he has three points of contact on it. He’s a pushover who isn’t much of a fighter.

Kazuho is a wannabe idol who holds impromptu street performances and uses her leaping quirk to hop around from rooftop to rooftop in a skimpy outfit.

Iwao is a grizzled, old tough guy with no quirk who goes around punching people, sometimes to the dismay of the others.

After running into each other patrolling the streets of Naruhata separately, Kazuho and Iwao kind of just move into Koichi’s weird rooftop shack apartment and he’s too meek to say anything. Together they patrol their neighborhood, trying to stop crime and villains and (in Koichi’s case) also pick up garbage.

My Hero Academia Vigilantes is technically a prequel to My Hero Academia, and while it has plenty of references to the main series it still stands well on its own. It’s more focused than the main series, dealing with fewer characters and really getting into those relationships, but also takes advantage of the weird world My Hero Academia created.

My Hero Academia Vigilantes is an obvious recommend to fans of My Hero Academia, but could also be of interest to people who thought My Hero Academia was too meandering and fans of more grounded superhero stories in general.
