Arm of the Law cover

One day in a corrupt, backwater town on Mars, a large crate shows up at the local police station. Inside? An experimental police robot.

Initially the cops there use the robot for menial cleaning tasks, but when a call comes about a robbery in progress at a local liquor store, the police chief dispatches the robot to handle it. From there, things rapidly spiral out of control.

Arm of the Law is a fun, very sharply written short story from noted science fiction author Harry Harrison. It came out in 1958 and moves at a great pace, with lots of colorful little hard-boiled, noir -isms sprinkled throughout the text.

Clocking in at 26 pages, it’s a light, fun little classic sci-fi story that is recommended for fans of golden age sci-fi and noir detective fiction from the same period.
