Smooth-Talking Cowboy cover

Olivia wants her ex back; Luke wants to buy land from Olivia’s father.  So they make a deal: Luke will play Olivia’s new flame to make her ex jealous, if Olivia will put in a good word for Luke.  But rarely do such simple plans stay that way, and if Olivia and Luke aren’t careful, the complications are going to send much more than just the plan up in flames.

Smooth-Talking Cowboy is the first of a new series by Maisey Yates, set in the next town over from her Copper Ridge series, Gold Valley.  The book is a simple romance, with relatively simple characters.  Our protagonists are both flawed – Luke is unsurprisingly prone to brooding, and Olivia is prone to manipulation – but their interactions prompt introspective reflection that allows both of them to realize how these behaviors aren’t in anyone’s best interests.  Their resulting growth allows Luke and Olivia to connect in a way they haven’t been able to with others.  While seeing this kind of reflection and development is a pleasant change of pace for a romance novel, there isn’t much else to set the book apart.  Still, you can’t go wrong if you’re just looking for a sweet, sensuous, feel-good read.

This edition also includes a bonus novella titled Seduce Me, Cowboy.  Jonathan Bear hires pastor’s daughter Hayley Thompson to be his assistant; Hayley takes the job as her first step out of Copper Ridge.  He’s brooding, she’s spirited, and their awkward interactions lead to an explicit happily ever after almost as quickly as this summary in this fast-paced, plot-driven story.
