In The Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland cover

In this Greco-Roman inspired standalone fantasy, readers will encounter blood magic, death magic, a spooky underworld, and ghostly guardians. The book follows nineteen-year-old Rovan in Thanopolis, a young woman with magic that she’s kept hidden since her father died trying to keep her from his fate: being assigned undead spirits to guard those with magic–and control them. But when she accidentally reveals her powers trying to save someone’s life, she’s bound to a spirit and thrust into a world of palace intrigue and deception.

Though desperate to escape, Rovan finds herself falling for two people she can’t fully trust: Lydea, a beguiling, rebellious princess; and Ivrilos, the handsome spirit with the ability to control Rovan, body and soul. Together, they uncover a secret that will destroy Thanopolis. To save them all, Rovan will have to start a rebellion in both the mortal world and the underworld, and find a way to trust the princess and spirit battling for her heart—if she doesn’t betray them first.

Strickland has taken some beloved YA staples–a fierce heroine, found family, and an adventure to overthrow a corrupt government–and stacked it with an incredible magic system, queer characters galore, and a swoony poly romance. In The Ravenous Dark is angsty and dark and twisty, but sprinkled with moments that bring a lightness and beauty to the story that makes it hard to put down.
