Persephone’s Curse invites readers into the mysterious and charming homelife of the four Farthing sisters. Their lineage is rumored to trace back to Persephone, the mythological queen of the Underworld, and her daughter, Melinoë, the goddess of madness. Each sister has inherited a unique talent that may be connected to their ancestry.
The story centers on the third sister, Winnie, who is gifted (or cursed) with the ability to see ghosts. One ghost, however, is visible to all of the Farthing sisters: the ghost of Henry, an eternally seventeen-year-old boy who has occupied their home for as long as they can remember. Though Henry has always been a familiar friend to all of the Farthing girls, a shift in his relationship with one of the sisters signals danger. Winnie is compelled to make a difficult choice to protect her sister, only to find the fallout from her decision results in an even greater threat to their family.
The narrative unfolds at a moderate pace with strong and compelling storytelling. The author expertly crafts a relatable sisterly connection that is simultaneously beautiful and hilarious, fueled by quick-witted banter that makes the characters captivating and loveable.
Audiences who appreciate the atmospheric, character-driven mysteries of Stranger Things and Wednesday will enjoy this book.
