A follow-up to Allen’s 2008 debut novel, First Frost is an enchanting story about family, love, and learning to embrace the things that make us unique. The two Waverly sisters, Claire and Sydney, are well known in their town for the “gifts” they possess and the odd occurrences that surround them, like a tree that only blooms in the winter, and a house that is known for locking out anyone it doesn’t like. Claire Waverly has built a successful candy business but no longer finds joy in creating the treats that have made her wealthy and famous. Sydney Waverly wants nothing more than to have a baby boy to complete her family, while her fifteen year old daughter, Bay, is in love with a senior who doesn’t know she exists.
Everyone is in turmoil the week before Halloween, when the first frost of the season is anticipated. No one can imagine how much their lives will change in just a few days with the arrival of a stranger and the surprising decisions of people around them.
This book is a fast read and the kind of feel good book that is perfect for a quiet afternoon. Thankfully, we are now approaching the final frost of the season, but this title is still worth reading if you are a fan of sweet stories with a dash of magic and mystery.
