Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets cover

James Whitman is a high school teenager who suffers from depression, anxiety, and an abusive home life. His sister, Jorie, has been expelled from school after getting into a fight with her ex-best friend. Consequently, she is quite literally kicked out of the house, never allowed to return. On top of James’s mental health issues, he deals with the guilt of not protecting his sister against their parents and every adult in the high school that seemingly dished out discipline without concern for why Jorie finally snapped. And when James discovers Jorie’s stash of razorblades in her old room, he takes it upon himself to get his sister readmitted into school so that she can graduate, and maybe even be allowed back home.

Radiohead. He yawps.

He takes psychiatric advice from the imaginary pigeon in his head called Dr. Bird.

This story is a must-read for teens and adults alike.
