September 1 – 30

Book options: The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas or Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, both books are by two Latinx authors, with stories that center a Latinx experience. The Sunbearer Trials is a fantasy perfect for fans of Percy Jackson and The Hunger Games, where Thomas takes you on a journey through Mexican mythology, filled with gods, their children, and a deadly trial. On the contemporary side, Furia follows a rising soccer star who must risk everything to follow her dreams, where Mendez creates obstacles through parents, past love, and secrets.

October 1 – 31

Book options: The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson or The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones

It’s scary month, and we’ve brought you two horror books—just on different levels. Jackson’s The Weight of Blood is for the true horror lovers as a fresh and new Carrie retelling, filled with psychological twists and turns and spine-tingling creepiness; whereas Lloyd-Jones has created an adventurously atmospheric tale with The Bone Houses—a light zombie story with slight gore, a romance, and a pet goat.

November 1 – 30

Book options: Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer or Running by Natalia Sylvester

With November comes elections, and this month we’re bringing you books with political plots. Sylvester has crafted a read that follows a teen who’s father is running for president–and the cost of that limelight in Running. Taking a more fantastical turn if you’re not interested in modern-day American politics, Kemmerer’s Defy the Night is a political fantasy with a deadly plague and rebellion, young royals thrust into power, and a kingdom on the brink of collapse.
