What does K-pop, second chance forbidden romance, and deciding against a career choice that you’ve worked your whole life for have in common? That would be ASAP by Axie Oh.
Sori has been training her whole life to become a K-pop star. With a mother who owns an entertainment company and a father with presidential aspirations, it’s always been expected of her to be in the public eye. Until she realizes a life in the spotlight forever is the opposite of what she wants. Which also means that she really shouldn’t be thinking about her ex-boyfriend Nathaniel so often–a member of one of the biggest K-pop bands in the world.
Forced to break up by Sori’s mother and Nathaniel’s contract that forbids him to date, Sori has worked hard the last two years to push him out of her mind. But when Nathaniel finds himself in the midst of a scandal, Sori offers him a hideaway with her. And in such close quarters after pushing him away for so long, it becomes impossible for them to deny their feelings.
The story follows Sori as she not only comes to terms with no longer wanting what she believed to be her dream future, but working to figure out what her new dream is. Her journey is one fraught with contradictions: a confident and assured person who has some deep familial trauma and resulting anxiety and insecurity, making her character arc one that will have readers glued to the page. Though, of course, the slow-burn, swoony romance helps. Past feelings have far from died out for Nathaniel and Sori, and that pining bleeds through each page. While the ending felt a little rushed and could have been fleshed out a little more, Oh has created a beautiful and captivating story that’s a tension-filled ride from start to finish.
