Show Up and Vote cover
It’s Election Day, and despite the bad weather, Mama is determined to vote. She takes her young child along to show her the importance of this responsibility. They line up, enter the booth, and pull the curtain closed. Di Franco’s writing makes the significance of the day easy for kids to grasp. The child feels proud and involved as Mama explains why voting matters: to “have a say / about laws and rules / about parks and schools.” The rhymes make it a fun read-aloud, while Baker’s earth-toned, retro-style illustrations add warmth and realism. The book shows voting as both important and familiar, with illustrations of a diverse, engaged community. After casting their votes and wearing their “I voted” stickers, Mama and child head home, knowing that voting is “how it all starts.”
