Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep. He’ll follow you home and won’t let you sleep.” is the legend that haunts the island of Sawkill Rock. The Collector, a folklore to most, is a mysterious creature that takes people in the night and they are never to be seen again. This nightmare becomes all too real to three girls: Val, the “it” girl, has everyone wrapped around her finger. Marion, the new girl, is mourning her father’s recent death and adjusting to life on the island. Zoey, the sheriff’s daughter, is a spunky go-getter who has her own theories about what happened to her missing best friend. As the secrets of Sawkill Rock threaten to come to the surface, all three girls are stuck in the middle.

Sawkill Girls is a dazzling nightmare and a dark dreamy fairytale. It is full of romance -lesbian and asexual-, women standing up and taking control, and twists and turns that will keep readers hooked. As the chapters alternate perspectives, Legrand makes sure each character gets their own voice and their own story. Val, Zoey, and Marion have distinct personalities that stand out on the page. The text is richly descriptive and all the little details bring this gruesome tale to life. The setting is solid, consistent, and easily visible, making the island and all of it’s horrid backstory feel like a very real place. Magical yet frightening, this book is for readers who love horror or dark tales.
