Trevor Noah is known in the USA as the host of The Daily Show since 2015, but this book tells the story of his youth.  Trevor Noah grew up in South Africa during both the time of apartheid and as apartheid came to an end.  He had a black mother and a white father and at the time of his birth, that was illegal.  He had to navigate a world in which he didn’t fit in either his mother’s or his father’s racial categorization due to the color of his skin.  He spoke multiple languages to adapt to many different settings, from his grandmother’s neighborhood to his Christian grammar school to that one time he got arrested for stealing a car.  His mother was a very strong influence on the man he has become.

His stories are richly depicted and he gives a snippet into the history that helped shape these moments in his life.  This is a book many will want to read in one sitting.  It is a 2022 nominee for the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award and was a #1 New York Times Bestseller.  This book was adapted for young readers from the original edition published in 2016.
