This fun and interactive picture book depicts a fossil dig by four young paleontologists of varying gender and race. From beginning to search for bones, all the way to piecing together a completed skeleton, the whole story can be sung to the tune of Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush. Additional smaller text on each page provides deeper factual information. The four children are depicted by the illustrator, Bob Kolar, as happy cartoon-like characters with oversized heads, but the background is realistic, down to the softly muted colors of the rock formations. Scattered throughout the full-page illustrations are animals that live in the region in which this story takes place, Montana’s Hell Creek Formation. A few pages of additional facts are located at the end of the book.

The song will capture the attention of younger listeners, while the extra information in the sidebars adds interest for older children. After a first reading, go back and seek out all the animals that appear in the scenes as the children hunt for bones. As a bonus, actions for children to do along with the words of the song are included. A perfect book for dinosaur storytime, either one-on-one or a group, this is an engaging way to learn about paleontology.
