I love movie trivia and learning behind the scenes stories about the actors and the making of movies. So when the book, As you wish: inconceivable tales from the making of the princess bride by Cary Elwes, a delightful book about the production of the 1987 classic movie The Princess Bride, came across my desk, I was eager to listen. The audiobook version is read by the author Cary Elwes who played the lead character Westley in the movie.

Elwes leads the reader through the casting process, the extensive fencing training he and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) went through, the filming, the film release and the 25th anniversary event in 2012.  The book contains photos of the set production and Elwes’ meetings with Pope John Paul II and President Clinton. One good trivia snippet I learned was that André the Giant (Fezzik) played Bigfoot in a couple episodes of The Six-Million Dollar Man.

The movie is based on the 1973 book, The princess bride: an illustrated edition of S. Morgenstern’s classic tale of true love and high adventure the “good parts” version written by William Goldman. Goldman is a screenwriter known for Academy Award winning films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men among others.

The audiobook also features commentaries from Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck), Christopher Guest (Count Tyrone Rugen), Wallace Shawn (Vizzini), Robin Wright (Princess Buttercup), Billy Crystal (Miracle Max), Carol Kane (Valerie) and Rob Reiner (director).

If you love movies, trivia, and The Princess Bride it’s inconceivable you should miss reading or listening to this book. But if you don’t, it’s as you wish.
