I placed holds for several books from the WPL and other libraries through the SWAN system and discovered that, similar to many fairy tales, there are multiple versions and retellings of this classic tale. Unlike the Disney version, most of the stories contain more than one genie and many of them depict genies that aren’t a bluish color. Yes, some even have female genies similar to that classic sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie.
Since that time, I’ve checked out both classic Broadway and newer versions of Hairspray to prepare myself for another production. Once again, I’m thankful that the library has the resources to help me answer even the most perplexing (or ridiculous) question.
