For most of the year, I gravitate towards recipes and cookbooks with the healthiest options. However, with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up and the prospect of cooking for a crowd, I’m looking for some fresh new recipes using good old fashioned comfort foods. While I personally would enjoy hummus and veggies for Christmas dinner, the rest of the family would not be very pleased!

For comfort food recipes with a generous dash of good humor thrown in, I can always count on Ree Drummond, aka the Pioneer Woman. I first heard of her after stumbling across the book The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels – a Love Story. Ree recounts the story of how her dream of living in Chicago changed after a chance encounter with a real life cowboy led to romance and eventually marriage.

The book led me to her blog, thepioneerwoman.com where I found not only more details of her life on a working cattle ranch with her husband, now four children, and beloved Bassett Hounds, but also a treasure trove of delicious, hearty recipes with step-by-step instructions and photos.

Recently, I checked out her newest cookbook, Pumpkin Smoothie recipe. It seems like just the thing for a Thanksgiving Day breakfast.

Check out her other cookbooks, too.
